Growth

A part of me considers having taken a gap year as something of a trial run. Being so far from home and comparatively on my own was a new experience, one I wanted to try briefly before going to university. Throughout the internship, I found myself branching out more, growing more confident, and simply learning how to take care of myself better in ways that I simply wasn't capable of back home. I feel this is something crucial to learn before spending more extended periods of time away from home. Obviously, circumstances are different for everyone, but I found that the safety net our program leaders provided was just the right blend of being secure without being suffocating. Interning in Northen Ireland provided me with an opportunity of personal growth and left a core memory I will forever cherish.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I were to travel back in time and get to do everything for the first time again, I can't say there's much I would change. The only thing different would be my level of confidence. Learning to live independently- even if only for three months, was something I was only really feeling comfortable with towards the end of the internship. Had I that confidence to start, I can only imagine how many more things I would've done, and how much more I could've explored on top of what I already did.
Pros
  • Highly walkable location, feels safe and fun to explore.
  • Easy to get physical activity in and just find stuff to do during free-time.
  • Had my own living space, even if it was with flatmates.
Cons
  • Had to maintain our living space on our own.
  • Lots of road-travel throughout a single day, sometimes multiple days in a row.

Europe Gap Review

I had an amazing experience with Europe Gap Year this spring. Ricky was such a down to earth guy and couldn’t have asked for a better mentor. Getting the opportunity to work with Tourism Northern Ireland was such a great experience. I felt that I learned so many little things throughout the program that will help later in life. Living independently was another huge aspect that I didn’t expect I’d learn so much from. Being with my group specifically was a good eye-opener. Having conversation and going out with kids from other parts of the world was definitely a great learning experience.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Most nerve-racking moment for me personally was adjusting to the program. I found it difficult at first to be in another country with kids I’ve never met prior. But Ricky was someone who definitely helped me out with this home sick. Learned a lot from this challenge and over coming it by challenging myself to create conversations and learn from others.
Pros
  • Independence
  • Confidence

Marvyn's review

Overall, this program had a very good balance between work and leisure where it wasn't too boring (too much free time), but also not overwhelming. I've tried so many different and more importantly, new things through this program; like surfing. I've also met a lot of great people that I hope to be friends with for longer. Coming out of this program, I also have a much more solid sense of identity and a lot more confidence in myself and living independently in university. The experiences of completing a professional social media campaign, speaking with professional businessmen, TedX speakers, and a photographer gave me a lot of insight on what career I'd like in the future and what skills I need to gain for that career.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would've taken more advantage of the free groceries that was part of the program fee because after a while, the amount of money spent on takeaway added up. I would've also tried to be more adventurous in the food I tried to cook so I had a solid menu coming into university.
Pros
  • Meeting people from around the world that are my age, all with different goals in life
  • Trying new things (surfing)
  • Gaining confidence (living independently)
Cons
  • Some students in the program were naturally more introverted and didn't really participate in the group activities
