Diversity & Inclusion 💙

CEA CAPA provides, in conjunction with Diversity Abroad, Destination Guides which provide resources and tips for Black/African-American students, Latinx students, Asian American students, and all other students of color.
Through our personalized advising, CEA CAPA takes steps to understand the needs of a diversity of student identities like the LGBTQIA+ community. In addition to diversity and identity training, CEA CAPA leadership engage in continuous department level project work to identify and revise policies and practices using the appropriate Justice, Equity, Diversity or Inclusion lens as a frame to reduce bias and barriers that impact students, faculty, and staff. CEA CAPA is intentional in elevating diverse student voices and providing a platform for a broad array of identities to share their experiences abroad. The CEA CAPA World Blog promotes stories and personal experiences from the perspectives of diverse student bloggers and vloggers.
CEA CAPA is willing and able to assist students with learning disabilities and physical disabilities. Students are requested to disclose disabilities through the application health forms as part of their application and in discussion with their application advisor or program manager. The earlier CEA CAPA is made aware of learning or physical disabilities the better we can work with the student, institution, and overseas team to tailor an Individualized Education Program if necessary to support the student.

Incredible Place and Program To Study

My program at CAPA was overall a success in that all my courses were tailored to my interests and the internship placement was ideal for my career path. The success of the internships varied drastically depending on the person and the company they were paired with, but the CAPA Internships team was generally pretty good about contacting companies if there were any issues. I lived in Camden and housing for me was incredible. The apartment was very modern and the cleaning service that was provided once a week was so helpful. I do wish they had more provided kitchenware and storage, and unfortunately my bedroom had three girls in it, but it wasn't an issue. The excursions and added benefits were nice and there were lots of resources for students. I went on field studies all around the theatre scene in London, including tickets to Mamma Mia, The Woman in Black, The Taming of The Shrew, and a backstage tour at The National.

What would you improve about this program?
I would like the housing coordinators to tell students not only check in times but also check out times for the apartments. It was really inconvenient to be forced to leave by 10am on departure day and having a 5pm flight because I wasn't told when we'd be expected to leave on the last day of the program when booking flights.

Life Changing Experience

Going into the program I was nervous as I had never done anything like this before but once I arrived I quickly became comfortable. The staff become like parents and are there when you have any questions about the area or ideas of what to do around the area.Going into the program I had anxiety about being that far away from home but felt very welcomed by the staff and other people in the program. I wish I could go back and be a little less nervous and do more but I got to experience everything I wanted to while in London.

Loving London

This program was all I could have asked for and more. The staff at CEA were absolutely amazing. I came on this program not knowing anyone, and never once felt alone. Cassandra was amazing, so approachable, personable and I really felt like she was there to make my experience the best that it could possibly be. There was a safety incident while I was in London, and the staff checked in immediately and made us check in to know we were all safe. Additionally, every week, we had to alert Cassandra of our weekend plans so that she was aware for safety purposes. She played an integral part in making a new, foreign city feel like home. There were also tons of fun activities planned, like seeing a West End Show, having afternoon tea, and a weekend trip to Wales. I would recommend CEA to anyone who's considering it.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Honestly, making friends was the biggest fear I had before coming here. As soon as I got to the airport, there were other people on the program and I began talking to them immediately. Putting myself out there socially was an imperative step to having a great time, and I'm so glad that I did because one of the girls that I met that day became one of my best friends, not only on the program, but for life.

Best time of my life!

Being able to study, work and live in a foreign country was the best decision I've ever made. While I was in London, I took two classes (International Marketing and a class regarding internships) and interned in Human Resources at the Marriott Hotel in Canary Wharf. This internship has by far been my favorite work experience in the sense that the work environment was great and I learned a lot about HR that I didn't know before, developing a new found passion for the field. A few resources that CAPA provided were housing situations that were within a close proximity to the whole city and unlimited use Oyster cards for the duration of the program, making it very easy to travel around the city. Not only did I gain personal and professional skills needed to live in a different country, but I acquired frienships and memories that I'll never forget.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make sure to set aside enough time for schoolwork but also for traveling and other fun activities. Going to Europe may be a once in a lifetime opportunity so definitely take advantage of the close proximity of other countries. That being said, make sure all assignments are done on time so you don't have to worry about them when you're out and about.

CEA Experience!

Studying abroad in London was one of the best experiences of my life. The CEA team was very helpful while I was there in planning activities to explore London's culture and lifestyle, planning trips, and providing guidance along the way. The excursions were one of my favorite parts about studying in London, especially being able to see as West End show, going to Wales and seeing Hampton Court. Cassandra was an absolute wonder to be with. She was always willing to help in whatever needed. The only problem I encountered was arranging classes while I was there since LSBU's schedule had changed. However, in the end, it all worked out. I also got to meet a lot of new people, through CEA and locals, which was amazing because I made many new friends! London truly did become my home even if it was for a short time!

Had a great time in London with CAPA!

I went abroad with CAPA on a 6-week summer trip to London. I had a part-time internship in digital marketing and took two classes, a history class about London as a global city and a professional development class. Overall, I had a great experience! We lived in a nice flat in Camden and had a reasonable commute by Tube or bus to class and work. The CAPA staff was great with offering any support needed, whether it be with finding a good internship or helping you plan a fun weekend trip. They planned some great events, like a trip to Wimbledon and a royal bike tour. London was a great place to be in the summer. There were plenty of great things to do around the city - and many of them were cost effective or free! I enjoyed all of the food markets and just walking around the beautiful parks on the weekend. Completing an internship abroad was something I wanted to do and am glad I chose to go with CAPA!

London Stole My Heart

My experience in London was absolutely incredible! This is a joint trip with the University of Missouri School of Journalism, so it was great to have support through my school and through CAPA. Our class with CAPA was amazing, and our professor brought us all over London. The fact that our class was so involved in learning about the different parts of London made the program that much better. We were out and about in London and Richard, our professor, had such an extensive knowledge about London that it made me much more comfortable to explore the city. We lived in Camden, which was housing provided by CAPA and we all loved it. It was super edgy and fun and was full of cool food markets and shopping. Also, CAPA was instrumental in connecting me with my internship, and it was the best internship I could have asked for.

What would you improve about this program?
I had a great experience with CAPA! I can't think of anything that needed to be improved within my program.

CAPA London Winter Session

CAPA was a life-saver during this trip! When we first arrived in London they walked through safety tips with us and welcomed us into a new city with open arms. Throughout the trip, the staff became more of mentors to everyone in my program- always making sure we were okay, knew what we were doing, knew where we were going, and just constantly checking in on us. Over the course of the program, everyone in my program became very close with the front desk workers at the CAPA location we had class at, it was super cool to get to know them on a personal level! In the middle of my trip I needed roommate accommodations and the staff of CAPA worked with me to make sure I had the best housing experience possible. Without CAPA, my time abroad would not have been as smooth.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
It goes quick- don't take your time abroad for granted. Appreciate and engulf every moment!
