The CEA CAPA World Blog promotes stories and personal experiences from the perspectives of diverse student bloggers and vloggers.

A Once in a Lifetime Experience

My time abroad studying with CAPA in London was an amazing experience that I will never forget. From the academics that gave an amazing global perspective, my internship that helped me realize more of my strengths within my field, and the CAPA sponsored events throughout the program I had an amazing time that really helped me grow.

From even before you get there CAPA staff helps you throughout the whole process and makes it a lot easier to have all paperwork in and deadlines met. When it came to getting placed in my internship, the CAPA internship team was very thorough in their questioning and interviews to make sure that they could give me the best fit for my interests.

My internship was a huge part of why I loved the CAPA program so much. In my internship I was able to gain valuable market research skills that I would never be able to gain from just the classroom. It was an amazing opportunity to work in an international office to get used to being in a professional environment with an additional perk of learning how to work abroad and with different cultures. The classes that I took complimented my amazing experience by offering programs that took me all around the beautiful city of London and gave me a more in-depth look to their history and the diverse people that live there.

The CAPA sponsored events were also really fun because they took you to different areas in England along with giving you opportunities to take different types of tours and enjoying different types of food all around London.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice to future travelers on this program is to enjoy every moment of it and to take advantage of all of the CAPA sponsored events!

Summer 2019 in London

The experience that CAPA provided me was a once in a life time opportunity. It really helped me grow as a student, a professional, and a culturally aware member of society. It pushed me completely out of my comfort zone and forced me to gain skills and confidence. Having an internship with a company in another country allowed me to widen my perspective and work with people from all over the world. I never thought I would get to work with people from Ireland, Britain, Russia and Mexico all in the same office, but CAPA gave me that chance. There were times where I felt CAPA was a little unorganized and had a communication disconnect between them and my company. Despite that, I got so much out of this experience and would do it all over again.

What would you improve about this program?
I think CAPA could improve with their communication. Before I left for London there were days where I had no idea what I needed to get done before leaving. This included things like how to get a Visa or what airport to book my flight into. I ended up getting a lot of help from CAPA representatives, but I felt like they could have made the process smoother for us students.

I want to go back everyday

I loved this program because it was so well fit to my needs and wants to study abroad. The staff and faculty were so helpful and friendly and I find myself missing walking into the CAPA building and talking to everyone who works there. I especially miss my professors! Mike Punter and I were very close and still keep in touch now almost a year later. I can't wait to go back and visit London and I know that I will definitely visit CAPA when I do. I'm also still in touch with my roommates and several other classmates from CAPA. It's so great to talk to people who miss it as much as I do and to have a network of people all over the world! I couldn't have asked for a better support system that also kept me challenged and working hard while I was there. This was easily the best decision I made in college.

What would you improve about this program?
If anything, I wish I had gotten my schedule sooner.

London and More!

I studied abroad in London for 3 months. While I was abroad I had the chance to go to 9 additional countries and experience a multitude of different cultures. I interned and volunteered while abroad. I spoke with many people about how Brexit was affecting their lives and their experiences migrating to the UK. In a manner of 3 months, I grew as a person and became more independent. I traveled all over with two friends and we became super close throughout the entire semester. Aside from the staff at CAPA and my friends, my biggest support system while in London was my host family. They were there to answer any questions I had and to help me when I and my friend lost our travel cards. Having a host family was the best decision I made while abroad, and I can't wait to go back to see them.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Plan well in advance. My friends and I traveled through Italy and Greece during our midterm break, we did this for about $600 per person accommodations and travel included. Some of our other classmates took similar trips and waited too long to book, they had to pay twice as much for the same trip.

Amazing experience!

I studied and interned abroad through CAPA London in Fall 2018 and it was absolutely a dream. The Staff at CAPA were all very supportive and hosted many events throughout the semester. There were always things to do in London and CAPA provided Oyster cards that had unlimited transfers for the tube/bus so it was easy to navigate the city. They also offered day trips throughout London and other parts of the UK.

The classes I took were relevant to my major and I received credits for all of them. Most classes had field trips so it was nice to learn outside of the classrooms. In my Finance class, we visited the Bank of England and for my Marketing class, we went to the Museum of Brands. The internship component was one of the main reasons why I chose CAPA. My internship placement was perfect and I developed critical skills that are transferrable for future careers. I experienced a lot of personal and professional growth during my time in London.

What would you improve about this program?
There were times when I felt overwhelmed by classes and required internship hours. Although I enjoyed my internship, I wish it was 15 hours instead of 20 hours so there was more free time during the weekdays.

CAPA Creative Arts

I absolutely loved my experience with CAPA! I had great roommates in my flat in Camden Town which is a really lively place to live and there's a ton to see and do just within the three blocks of where I lived. The tours and day trips they organized were tons of fun and got me closer with my classmates who are now some of my best friends and we are already planning trips to continue traveling together. The staff at CAPA was amazing and really supportive with anything I needed from being sick and losing my voice during presentation week, to losing my phone, to just sitting and talking to me about what I wanted to do with my career and how they can help me get there. I also LOVED my internship and stay in contact with the people I worked with as they might be expanding parts of their organization to the US and have invited me to work with them if they do! Going abroad with CAPA was the best thing I've ever done and I would do it again without a doubt

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I could change anything about my experience it would be getting to know more Londoners and making friends outside of my program of American students. I love to friends I did make and I talk to them everyday, but I wish I had made a few more connections with people that are from England to stay in touch with.

A Life Changing Experience

I had the opportunity to study abroad with CAPA in London in the spring of 2018. Deciding to study abroad was definitely out of my comfort zone but I knew I had to take the leap to further my learning and I am very glad I did. CAPA was very hands on throughout the whole application and pre departure process. I received a number of materials that answered all of my questions prior to crossing the pond. I wasn't very close with anyone else from my school who went to London but CAPA helped me find my community through my roommates, classmates, and also through cultural and social events put on throughout the semester. There were a number of walking and boat tours around the city and events such as curry nights and tea and biscuits in the CAPA center every Tuesday. These events gave us a little taste of the city and British culture. It is important to immerse yourself in the culture of your host country to get the most out of your experience. I even got sick while I was in London and the CAPA staff helped me book a doctors appointment right away, they were very helpful. Throughout my new living and learning environment in London, I was able to learn a lot about myself and the world around me. My experience abroad even led me to a career path in global education. I would love to work for CAPA one day and maybe even move back to London :)

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
While I was in London there was a light festival throughout the city called Lumiere London. The festival spans over 4 nights and showcases the architecture and streets of London with more than 50 art/light installations set up all over the city. It was one of our first weeks there so it was so fun to explore the streets of London while admiring all of the light displays. It is definitely a must if you study in London!

CANNOT recommend CAPA more!!!

Studying abroad in London has been a dream of mine since the beginning of High School. I've always thought I could learn so much more by going somewhere new and studying/interning. Also, an international internship on my resume? Heck yes! That looks awesome. That being said, my University has a program in London; however, they are renovating the place we normally stay in, so we studied abroad with CAPA instead. I was a bit hesitant because I was looking forward to studying abroad with my University's program, but the CAPA program was more than I every could have dreamt! They matched me with my absolute dream internship, and half of my classes during the semester were outside of the classroom, exploring different parts of London. The professors and staff at CAPA were super helpful (seriously, ask them for advice/places to eat/things to do!!), and my commute on the tube became one of my favorite parts of the day. I highly recommend trying to live in London, not just be a tourist there for 3 months. Find a local coffee shop that you love. Visit non-touristy parts of the city (Richmond is beautiful!). Embrace this experience-- everything that's fun, and hard, and incredibly about it. You won't regret it!
